  • Leadership For a Future (LFAF) now accepting applications for its 2010 Class

The Institute for Labor Studies and Research and Rhode Island for Community and Justice are currently accepting applications for the LFAF class of 2010. This state-wide program provides a leadership training environment for emerging leaders from community groups, labor unions and the religious community. It also provides an opportunity for leaders from diverse groups and diverse backgrounds to forge relationships and networks that will benefit themselves and their organizations throughout their lives.

In addition to obtaining information from resource people about Rhode Islands history, culture, economics and politics, leaders in the program will share their experiences and learn from each other. This process will create a powerful, committed, diverse network of graduates who have taken the time to understand and know each other. This network is critical and necessary if the shared goals of economic and social justice for all our citizens are to be achieved.

Jonathan Mendelsohn, an Assistant Principal at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School and a graduate from LFAF Class 2008, states:

The Leadership for a Future Retreat is a weekend that will change your life; you will learn so much about yourself as a future leader of Rhode Island through reflective and team building activities. Most importantly, you will understand the power of making connections with people of diverse backgrounds. You will leave feeling inspired to begin the hard work of changing our communities and state.

To apply send your name, organization (if any), address, phone and email to: cbernal1@att.net, 463-9900 or nandas@etal.uri.edu, 467-1717 x 103. The cost of the program is $400.00 and scholarships are available! The program starts with a weekend retreat at Canonicus Camp and Conference Center in Exeter, RI from January 22 through January 24, 2010. Following the retreat are nine sessions which will meet every other Tuesdays from 4:30pm 8:30pm at various locations with one session on Saturday, February 6th. Deadline for applications is January 8, 2010. For a registration brochure, please go to: http://www.rilaborinstitute.org/future.html or www.ricj.org

    To be eligible, individuals must:
    - Commit to the overnight retreat
    - Commit to seven of the nine sessions to graduate

The Institute and RICJ do not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, color, disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, or ethnic origin in the administration of its policies and programs.
