  • 4th Annual Rhode Island Summit: The Future of Small Business

    The 4th Annual Rhode Island small business summit took place on Friday January 8th at the Johnson & Wales University Culinary Museum. Over 110 small business owners had signed up to attend this years summit days before the event which ended up to be a full house, standing room only audience for the 7:45AM Opening Session.

    Greetings from Johnson & Wales University Vice President of Academic Affairs, SBA Regional Administrator Jeanne Hulit and a late entry in Keith Stokes, recent Carcieri appointee to the RI Foundation Board of Directors and Interium Director of RI Economic Development Corporation and Mark Hayward, SBA District Director. An overview of the 10 points that have been suggested for legislative changes for legislative year 2010 will be part of the focus this year.

    The five standing committee chairs:
    Cap Willey for committee on Economic Development & Tax,
    Miriam Ross, Esq. for the committee on Energy,
    John Gregory for the committee on Workforce Development and Education,
    Phil Papoojian for the committee on Health Care
    Gary Ezovski for the committee on Regulations

    Breakout sessions were used to discuss the 10 points, add and amend or append any of the discussion held in the breakouts followed by a working lunch where the committee chairs provided an overview of the discussions in each of the breakouts on the 10 topics.

    This year Governor Donald Carcier, Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts, Secretary of State Ralph Mollis, Attorney General Patrick Lynch, General Treasurer Frank Caprio, Speaker William Murphy, Leader Gordon Fox and Senate Majority Leader Daniel Connors; along with 19 other State Representatives and 7 State Senators.
    They will listen to the presentations then take the stage to react to the 10 proposals followed by the convening of a hearing by the Senate Select committee on Small Business chaired by Sen. Erin Lynch. The day was well planned and accomplished the goals set forth in the Agenda and promotional material.
